The World’s first offshore LNG Regasifier

Exxon Mobil, together with its partners, have announced another first.

Exxon Mobil Corporation today announced that the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo arrived at the Adriatic LNG3 regasification Terminal located offshore of Porto Levante, Italy aboard the LNG carrier, Dukhan. Â

The terminal is an interesting one.

The Adriatic LNG Terminal is the first offshore Gravity Based Structure (GBS) in the world for unloading, storage and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It is located offshore of Porto Levante, in the province of Rovigo, about 15 kilometers off the Veneto coastline. Â

By basing it offshore, it no doubt reduced the planning & permission problems that otherwise would have been inevitable.

Gasoline Consumption

How price elastic is gasoline consumption? Its an extremely important question following a period of record prices. This Week In Petroleum has an interesting point pertaining to the issue.

Comparing the last two years to 1979-80: In 1979-80, real per-mile fuel costs increased an average of more than 15 percent; and highway travel declined by an average of 1.0 percent per year despite an average annual GDP growth of 1.5 percent. In contrast, real per-mile fuel costs in 2007-08 increased an average of only 10 percent per year, somewhat less than that in 1979-80. Nonetheless, highway travel declined by an average of more than 2 percent per year—two times that of the 1979-80 decline—despite an average GDP growth similar to that of 1979-80. The impact of the recent rises was much greater.

Why?

This result suggests that, in the second period, the rapidity of the increase in prices to record levels resulted in a larger shift in consumer behavior.

Consumers were shocked by the rises and have decided that they are here to stay. This is a perception that will not go away in a hurry, a fact very significant in terms of consumption.
